The Storm Trail
The sky over the mountains of Colorado was turning dark when David Carter and his 12-year-old daughter Lily began their hike. What was supposed to be a simple weekend adventure quickly started to feel… different.
“Dad, are you sure this is the right trail?” Lily asked, looking at the narrow path disappearing into the forest.
David smiled. “Of course. A little adventure never hurt anyone.”
Lily loved adventures with her dad. Since her mom passed away a few years ago, these trips had become their special time together. But today something felt strange. The forest was too quiet. No birds. No wind. Just silence.
As they walked deeper into the woods, Lily noticed something on the ground.
“Dad… look.”
It was a small metal compass, broken and covered in mud.
“That’s odd,” David muttered. “No hikers were supposed to be here this week.”
Suddenly, a loud crack echoed through the forest.
They both froze.
“Probably a branch,” David said, though his voice didn’t sound very confident.
Then they heard footsteps.
Not theirs.
Slow. Careful. Following them.
Lily grabbed her dad’s hand. “Someone’s behind us.”
David looked around. The trees were thick and shadows stretched across the trail.
“Stay close to me,” he whispered.
They started walking faster.
The footsteps behind them got faster too.
Then suddenly a dark figure moved between the trees.
Lily gasped. “Dad!”
David quickly pulled her behind a large rock. His heart was pounding. He carefully peeked around the edge.
A man in a dark jacket was walking along the trail, looking at the ground… like he was tracking them.
“Why would someone follow us?” Lily whispered.
“I don’t know,” David replied quietly. “But we’re not waiting to find out.”
He grabbed Lily’s hand and they ran off the trail, pushing through thick bushes and branches. The forest grew darker as clouds covered the sun.
Behind them they heard shouting.
“HEY! STOP!”
The man had seen them.
They ran downhill until they reached an old wooden cabin hidden between the trees. The door hung half open.
“Inside,” David said.
They rushed in and locked the door with a rusty metal bar.
Lily’s hands were shaking. “What if he finds us?”
David looked around the dusty cabin. Old maps were scattered on a table.
Then he saw something strange.
One map had red circles drawn across the mountain… and one of them was right where the cabin stood.
Footsteps suddenly approached outside.
The man was here.
The door handle slowly started turning.
Lily held her breath.
David grabbed a heavy wooden chair, ready to defend his daughter.
The door pushed hard against the metal bar.
Once.
Twice.
Then silence.
The footsteps slowly walked away.
They waited for several minutes before David carefully looked out the window.
The man was gone.
Lily sighed with relief.
“Dad… that was the scariest adventure ever.”
David laughed softly and hugged her. “Yeah… maybe next weekend we go somewhere safer.”
Lily smiled.
“But Dad… I think I liked this adventure.”
Outside, the storm finally began to rain over the mountains as father and daughter waited safely inside the cabin — together.
