The Whispering House on Blackwood Lane
In the quiet town of Raven Hollow, Oregon, there was a street people avoided after sunset—Blackwood Lane. It wasn’t on tourist maps, and locals rarely spoke about it. But everyone knew the story of the house at the end of the road.
The house had been abandoned for over thirty years.
Its windows were broken, the wooden walls were dark and rotting, and the front porch leaned slightly to one side like it was tired of standing. Tall dead trees surrounded it, their branches scratching the roof whenever the wind blew.
But the strangest thing?
At night… people sometimes heard whispers.
The New Arrival
One cold October evening, Daniel Carter, a 27-year-old journalist from Seattle, arrived in Raven Hollow. Daniel wrote stories about strange places and unsolved mysteries. When he heard rumors about the house on Blackwood Lane, he knew it could become his biggest story yet.
At a small diner in town, Daniel asked the waitress about it.
The woman froze for a moment.
“You shouldn’t go there,” she said quietly.
Daniel smiled. “People say that about every haunted place.”
The old man sitting at the next table slowly looked up.
“That house isn’t haunted,” he said.
Daniel raised an eyebrow. “Then what is it?”
The man’s voice became almost a whisper.
“Hungry.”
The First Night
Daniel reached Blackwood Lane just before midnight. The moon was hidden behind thick clouds, and the road felt darker than the rest of the town.
The house stood at the end of the lane, silent and still.
He stepped inside.
The floor creaked under his boots. Dust floated through the air. His flashlight beam moved across broken furniture and peeling wallpaper.
Everything felt… wrong.
Then he heard it.
A faint whisper.
At first it sounded like the wind.
But then the whisper turned into words.
“...Daniel…”
He froze.
His heart began pounding.
“How do you know my name?” he said aloud.
Silence.
Then—
A loud thud upstairs.
The Stairs
Daniel slowly climbed the staircase. Each step groaned like it might collapse.
At the top, a long hallway stretched into darkness.
His flashlight flickered.
One door at the end of the hall slowly creaked open.
Daniel felt cold air brush against his neck.
The whisper returned.
“Come… closer…”
Against his better judgment, Daniel walked forward.
The room at the end of the hall looked like a child’s bedroom. Old toys lay scattered across the floor. A small rocking chair moved gently back and forth… even though no one was there.
Then Daniel noticed something on the wall.
Hundreds of names.
Scratched into the wood.
People who had disappeared over the years.
His stomach twisted when he saw the last name.
Daniel Carter.
Written only minutes ago.
The Truth
Suddenly the door slammed shut behind him.
The rocking chair stopped moving.
And from the dark corner of the room, something began to stand up.
It was tall. Too tall to be human.
Its body looked like it was made of shadows, but its face was pale and stretched into a twisted smile.
Its eyes were empty black holes.
“You came… just like the others,” the creature whispered.
Daniel tried to run to the door, but it wouldn’t open.
“What are you?” he shouted.
The creature slowly stepped closer.
“This house feeds,” it said softly.
“On fear.”
Suddenly the walls began whispering. Hundreds of voices echoed around him.
Crying. Screaming. Begging.
All the people who had entered the house… and never left.
The Escape
Daniel’s flashlight fell to the floor.
Darkness swallowed the room.
The creature moved closer.
Closer.
Daniel’s breathing became frantic.
Then he remembered something the old man said at the diner.
The house isn’t haunted.
It’s hungry.
If the house fed on fear…
Daniel forced himself to stop panicking.
He stood still.
The creature tilted its head.
“No…” it hissed.
Daniel laughed nervously.
“You can’t scare me.”
The whispers grew louder.
The creature screamed in anger.
The door suddenly burst open.
Daniel ran.
Down the stairs.
Out the front door.
And didn’t stop running until he reached the town.
The Next Morning
The next day, the police went to investigate the house after Daniel reported what happened.
But when they arrived…
There was no house.
Just an empty field.
No trees.
No porch.
Nothing.
The officers thought Daniel had imagined everything.
But Daniel knew the truth.
Because when he checked his jacket pocket…
He found a small piece of wood.
And scratched into it were three words.
“We are waiting.”
That night, Daniel woke up suddenly in his apartment in Seattle.
From inside his closet…
He heard the same whisper.
“Daniel…”
